Pogo sticks are most popular with young boys and girls and teenagers, but many adults use them too as a form of exercise equipment - using a pogo stick can help to keep you healthy as well as providing hours of fun. Most pogo sticks are suitable for children aged five and over, although some of the more powerful sticks are not recommended for kids under the age of eight.
Pogo sticks were hugely popular in the 1920s and this delightful toy keeps coming back into fashion every few years. The pogo stick has come a long way since it was originally invented and modern pogo sticks are able to bounce much higher than earlier models due to improved on board technology. The latest designs of pogo sticks are very intricate indeed and allow the pogo stick user to bounce several feet into the air and have led to the emergence of new sports including stunt pogo and extreme pogo. Some pogo experts can even do back flips and a variety of other daring tricks.
The pogo stick is great fun for children but also helps them develop their balance and timing - initially it can be difficult getting the hang of using a pogo stick and most people can only manage one bounce at the first attempt. But after a bit of practice should be able to bounce several times and you'll soon become the envy of your friends who are trying out a pogo stick from the first time.
Using a Pogo Stick
The idea behind the pogo stick is very simple but using it effectively is not so easy. First the user places his or her feet on the two foot rests at the base of the main pole of the pogo stick. Then you start to jump up and down, bending your knees slightly in unison with the movement of the pogo stick's main spring, while holding on firmly to the handles. When the spring extends the pogo stick and user is propelled upwards and the cycle begins again when the stick hits the ground again and the spring becomes compressed. You can steer a pogo stick in different directions by leaning your weight slightly where you wish to bounce to.
Pogo Stick Safety
A pogo stick is great fun if used safely so it is important to take a few precautions and use it wisely to avoid the risk of an accident occurring.
You must use your pogo stick on a smooth, flat and solid surface to avoid the risk of falling off and hurting yourself. Concrete or tarmac is ideal but grass, soil or a sandy surface would be completely unsuitable.
Young children are advised to wear elbow and knee pads and you should always give yourself plenty of room when using a pogo stick. It's also worth considering wearing a cycling helmet or other safety helmet. If you start to feel dizzy at all you should stop using a pogo stick immediately. Always wear shoes or trainers when using a pogo stick to avoid the risk of hurting your feet.
We have an impressive range of cheap pogo sticks but it's probably wise to buy the most expensive pogo stick you can afford to ensure the product has been manufactured to high standards. A pogo stick will provide many hours of fun and enjoyment for young children and teenagers if looked after properly so you should always store your pogo stick away safely in a shed or garage when you are not using it to avoid the risk of wet weather causing the moving parts to become rusty. Pogo sticks have been providing plenty of fun for young boys and girls for many years and provide them with plenty of healthy exercise.
Pogo Stick history
The forerunner of the pogo stick emerged in 1881 when George H. Herrington of Wichita, Kansas created a stilt using compression springs. In 1920 Max Pohlig and Ernst Gottschall patented a 'spring end hopping stilt' in Germany and it is believed the first two letters of these two men's surnames were used to come up with the name Pogo. The first two handled pogo stick was patented in 1957 and although the design style of the pogo stick has been developed considerably since then the core concept of this popular toy has remained the same.
